You sound so excited about your planed adventure to Florence. I've been, and absolutely loved it. It's a place with such a depth of history in it's bones. 1497 marked Bonfire of the vanities; a pyre which devoured books, works of art, musical instruments, jewellery. I even heard that some of Botticelli's paintings found their way onto it.
You can go and see Galileo's first telescope. Walk beside the Arno river. Then go and purchase some fabulous Florentine shoes.
