Thank you so much for this post. A co worker and I constantly rail against the ageism at work. It’s in both how people over 50 (particularly women) are treated in house and in publications. Of particular irritation are the almost senile cute elders with bottle glasses and bad perm hair on the covers of large print for seniors (though with the eye issues screen obsessed youth are having they could eliminate senior)We also think instead of “guide for —— phone for seniors “ it should be BASIC guide (cut out seniors). Very appreciative of your work. Am requesting your book for (US) Mother’s Day. Thanks again!

Thank you for your comments. I'm so pleased you enjoyed the post. It's my aim, and that of many other older women, to work on changing society's narrative about older people. It underlines most of my writing here on Substack. Changing the language used for older people is something else I'd like to see happen, hence my use of 'older people' rather than 'old people' or 'seniors'. You're right about the title of the book, older people are not dumb. I hope your mother enjoys my book. Thank you in advance for getting it for her.

yes, butter, lovely delicious butter. For years, I would buy it when on sale, pounds of it, and store in the freezer. When the price began to rise a few years ago, I kept my eye out for sales, and stocked up. I did a good job! Then, life caught up with me and told me that perhaps it was better to quite the 'high protein, low carb' way of eating that I'd practiced for years. The last few years have been mostly 'plant based' but every now and then I have butter. I solved a few medical issues in my body, from quitting meat, flesh, etc (well, I still cheat ocassionally) dairy and increasing lovely vegetables. I have read that seed oils are not a miracle cure and they are still not good or you if used too much; especially if you do have certain medical issues or whatever. This is not a warning or a lecture to anyone. Do what is right for you. At one point in the past, I had 40+ lbs of butter in my freezer! This was when both my kids and late dh lived here. Now, it's me, one adult child and Jim, a sweet man who is moderate in butter consumption.

Thank you, Sherry, for your insights into this issue of butter. You're right, we have to weigh up the evidence and make our own choices, in the end. Even the 'evidence' changes as science can update its original findings on a matter. I'm still to be convinced either way about seed oils so I'm sticking with extra virgin olive oil and nut butters. I appreciate your input. :-)

I’ve substituted applesauce for oil in baking.

I haven’t looked at the butter study, yet. But it does reflect the consensus of most scientists. Thank you for reminding all of us of the dangers of saturated fat and butter.

I haven’t phased out butter completely but found some easy swaps for it in sandwiches e,g hummus or light cream cheese.

Lovely post! I used soooo much butter in my previous life, now a pound of butter lasts forever.... I replaced it with peanut butter or any nut butter instead of butter on toast... and lots of extra virgin olive oil in cooking and baking, with the occasional butter in mashed potatoes and in 'traditional' baking... here is a no butter cupcake recipe that uses avocado oil! https://minimalistbaker.com/one-bowl-vegan-funfetti-cupcakes/#wprm-recipe-container-35833, enjoy!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who struggles with using oil for toast and so forth. It isn't as great as butter, but I'm getting used to it, and almost crave it.

I use applesauce for baking to replace oil. Now about sugar. This is the real issue. We sometimes need our sweets. Alternative sugar doesn't work for me, at all. I don't eat candy, drink soda, and rarely eat desert, but when that sweet tooth hits I need something to fix it. This is my current dilemma. I want to bake delicious white cupcakes from scratch. If anyone has a somewhat healthy recipe for cupcakes, share, please!! I want to perfect them for our five-year anniversary coming up in September. I'm terrible in the kitchen, especially baking, so it'll take that long just to make them edible.

Great article, Patricia!

I hope someone reads your plea for cupcake recipes, Patti. I don't often make cakes these days but I have made banana bread and flapjacks within the last year. As for something sweet, I've found dates can provide that for me. I love them but limit myself to three. I'm glad you enjoyed the article. Thank you for your input.

I bought dates yesterday. I don't like them solo, its the texture. I'll add them to my muffins for sweet, they won't go to waste, for sure!

Super good post, Patricia. I knew that older people hsd less car accidents. I wonder whether older women have less accidents than men. We tend to be more cautious I think… Butter: I haven’t eaten any since being diagnosed with colitis. I make cakes without butter often, using either coconut oil, or olive oil, or no oil (a Santiago

Cake is almonds, eggs, sugar, lemon zest and cinnamon and it’s delicious! Takes five minutes to mix and 30 to cook. My kind of baking!). I have used olive oil in mashed potatoes or baked potatoes for decades. I don’t miss butter. I love almond butter and if I have jam I’ll use a vegetable oil spread.

Thank you, Francesa. I'm glad you enjoyed the post. And thank you for the alternatives to butter. Almond butter, yes - I like that suggestion. I can't wait to try the cake recipe! Great suggestions!

There are loads of recipes for Santiago cakes online. It works well with dessicated coconut instead of cinnamon and lemon!
